Maria thought her new life had just begun.
The wedding celebration was almost over. The house had grown quiet, the voices of the guests were fading in the distance, and only a few flowers from the ceremony remained on the table.
Maria stood alone in the softly lit room, still holding part of her wedding dress in her hands.
She was tired, emotional and nervous.
Then the door opened quietly.
Her father-in-law, Richard, stepped inside.
His face was serious, almost frightened. In his hand, he held a thick envelope.
Maria turned around in shock.
“Richard?” she whispered. “What’s wrong?”
He did not answer right away.
Instead, he walked to the table and placed the envelope in front of her.
It was full of money.
Maria stared at it, confused.
Richard leaned closer and whispered:
“Get dressed and leave through the back door. Now. They are already here.”
Maria’s heart began to race.
“What are you talking about?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Richard looked toward the hallway, listening.
Then he lowered his voice even more.
“There is something this family never told you,” he said. “You are not safe here tonight.”
Maria’s hands began to shake.
She quickly grabbed a coat and picked up the envelope from the table. She moved toward the back door, trying not to make a sound.
But just as she reached it, heavy footsteps stopped outside the room.
The front door opened somewhere downstairs.
Then came muffled male voices.
Maria froze.
Richard slowly stepped in front of her, as if trying to protect her without saying a word.
Her breath became shallow.
She looked at him with fear in her eyes.
“Who are they?” she whispered.
Richard did not answer.
And that silence terrified her more than any explanation could have.
In that moment, Maria understood that her new family had hidden something from her.
Something powerful.
Something dangerous.
Something that had followed them straight into the house on the very first night of her marriage.
She had entered that home as a bride.
But now she was standing in the middle of a secret that could change her life forever.
